Clifton David Studio was engaged to transform an unloved rental property into a warm, dynamic and peaceful home. Our outcome is made up of rhythmic forms, ancestral colors and a focus on creating calm.

Like the entire house, the bedroom design is a tribute of sorts to the vibrancy and rich history of Harlem, New York as well as the things our client loves most. We commissioned two charcoal drawings of her beloved companions to live beside her bed surrounding her with all the love and energy of man's best friend.

The dining area is serving modernism and boldness. A classic mid-century shelving divider provides function and place while the Saarinen style tulip table plays the role of sculpture in the center. A commissioned photograph by Wesley Harrell hangs on the wall.

Breaking from the native shape of the home, we decided to bring in some curved and rounded elements to create a sense of dynamism and intimacy. We kept a soft palette but layered a variety of textures and tonal variations to maintain the sense of calm with the air of sophistication.

“Our client needed a place of tranquility and refuge from her busy life that reflected the elegance of her style, the abstraction of jazz,  and the soulfulness of her vibrant community.”
